Style & Quality from the
famous Columbia Gorge.
“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”
Evans Vineyard specializes in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Bordeaux style Reds.
Evans Vineyard was founded in 2006 when we were looking to make wines in the Northern Hemisphere. The success of the New Zealand winery motivated us to find a place were we could grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in a cool climate similar to New Zealand. We also wanted to be close to vineyards that grew Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, etc….varieties that are not suited to New Zealand. The Columbia Gorge viticultural area provided that opportunity.
Underwood Mountain, located at 1850 altitude and above the Columbia River is definitely cool climate…perfect for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Access to the stunning vineyard sites in eastern Washington allows us to purchase Bordeaux varieties and make those wines. Perfect….cool climate and access to warm climate reds.
So here we started again, making Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, just as we do in New Zealand but 8000 miles away. Traveling back and forth between New Zealand and the Northwest a few times a year can be a handful for us, Matt Rutherford and Jules Randell. But we are all trained winemakers and the experience is humbling. But in the end, making the best wines we can is the ultimate goal and already starting to show itself in the reviews and awards we are seeing from our Evans Vineyard wines.
How niche market making Pacifica wines has been exciting as we are the Northwest’s only fully kosher winery. Prior to these wines there were no such wines made in the Northwest. It has opened up the wonderful world of Oregon and Washington wines to the kosher world.
